The centuries-old connection between cork and wine and the extraordinary ability to integrate modern architecture projects into the landscape were instrumental for the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira to include it in the warehouse for ageing wines at Quinta do Portal. This space, where Port and Douro wines rest and age, is made of steel and concrete and uses materials such as shale and cork to blend into the vineyard setting. For this purpose, MDFachada expanded insulation corkboard by Amorim Isolamentos was used, which covers the facade's upper wall. The design won the «Best of Wine Tourism 2011» prize, in the Architecture and Landscapes category, awarded by Great Wine Capitals Global Network, and the Douro Architecture Prize 2010/2011 which aims to encourage good practice in architecture in this landscape which is classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.
