Nazaré
Legendary waves demand legendary surfboards. Portuguese cork was the material chosen for Garrett McNamara’s new surfboard, developed in a partnership between Mercedes-Benz Portugal and Corticeira Amorim.
The challenge was to create a ground-breaking surfboard, in a Portuguese project with worldwide impact. The new cork-based tow-in boards are designed to overcome the colossal challenge of Nazaré’s big waves.
Until very recently, Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara held the world record for riding the biggest wave ever surfed. He has dedicated his entire life to surfing big waves in extreme conditions. With the first MBoard 1.0 board, he surfed the waves in Nazaré at 62.4 km / hour. With the new generation MBoard 2.0 and MBoard 3.0 boards, incorporating cork, the goal is to find the perfect balance between the weight, flexibility and speed of the boards.
