The partnership between Corticeira Amorim and Vitra Design Museum (VDM) - one of the world’s most important design museums – has brought over 3200 agglomerated cork blocks supplied by the Portuguese company to Weil am Rhein, Germany. The blocks are being used in the exhibition Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors. They have made it possible to create artistic structures that covered about one third of the entire exhibition space. The supports, designed by the Italian design, architecture and research firm, Space Caviar, are being used to showcase design articles, decorative products and items of furniture.
Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors, which opened its doors this weekend, explores current interior design trends, while revisiting pioneering spaces. This journey across time highlights the social, political, cultural, urban and technical changes that have shaped Western interior design over the past 100 years. Cork is an integral part of this history.
The collaboration between Corticeira Amorim and VDM is supported by Amorim’s mission to add value to cork in a different, qualitative and innovative manner, in particular, by supporting various artistic, educational and scientific projects. These initiatives help disseminate the versatility, multi-disciplinarity and innovation potential of this unique raw material - a typically Portuguese material, that is 100% natural, ecological, renewable, recyclable and reusable.
The agglomerated cork blocks used in Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors were produced by Amorim Cork Composites (ACC), one of Corticeira Amorim’s most technologically advanced industrial units. ACC uses cork that isn’t used in the cork stopper industry as its core raw material. This cork waste is used to develop a unique set of high-performance materials, for industries such as aerospace, automotive, energy, construction and sports, among many others.
The exhibition Home Stories: 100 Years, 20 Visionary Interiors runs until August 23, when it will begin a 5-year tour to various museums around the world.
