Similarly to what has been already done by Corticeira Amorim’s volunteers, another plantation of cork oaks and other native species will be now carried out at PERM - Materials Recovery Facility at the Pigeiros Business Park, next November 21st, from 9:30 a.m. This will be the first reforestation initiative that will take place in the municipality of Santa Maria da Feira where the Portuguese cork manufacturing firms are concentrated. This initiative also received the support of the municipal authorities and Quercus’ Common Forest Project.
Covering an area of about 44 hectares, PERM has been designed with the purpose of encouraging scrap material recovery and recycling companies to concentrate and use eco-efficient methods to treat scrap material. Fully in line with this environmental protection commitment, the municipal authorities of Santa Maria da Feira have challenged Corticeira Amorim to play an active role in a local reforestation initiative to plant 2,425 trees that will be carried out next Saturday.
It should be noted that this is the second time in 2015 that Corticeira Amorim’s volunteers plant native tree species, which means that they will be responsible for planting about 6,500 new trees in one year only.
The trees to be planted at the Pigeiros Business Park have been provided by Quercus as part of the Common Forest Project. These native trees are more resistant and better adapted to local soil and climatic conditions than non-native trees. These trees are typically found in southern Portugal. This type of forest plays a key role in retaining CO2 (the main cause of global warmingCorticeira Amorim has been a partner in the Common Forest Project since its inception. The revenue raised from the Green Cork recycling program is being used to finance the preservation of Portugal’s indigenous forests.
Since 2011 to so far this year, Corticeira Amorim’s volunteers have planted over 11,000 native trees with a preponderance of cork oaks.), regulating the soil’s hydrologic cycle and preserving biodiversity.
