Following last years' initiatives, Corticeira Amorim's employees joined Quercus (Portuguese Association for Nature Conservation) in another reforestation action with native trees of Portugal.
The purpose of the reforestation initiative, which took place in common land in Caramulo, was also to honour the fire brigades. In addition to Corticeira Amorim's employees and Quercus members, the tree planting action has been attended also by volunteer firefighters of Tondela and Campo de Besteiros as well as volunteers of the Guardão Town Council.
The planting of over 2,000 trees took place on a 3-acre site that burned in a fire two years ago. This is one of several reforestation initiatives with native forest species, in which Corticeira Amorim's volunteers have been actively engaged. Over eight thousand native trees (particularly cork oaks) have been planted so far.
Planting oaks and cork oaks in the Caramulo Mountain will contribute to the creation of a natural barrier against the spread of fire in the future, as native leafy tree species are best adapted to the soil and climatic conditions of the area and are more resistant to fire, pests, diseases, long periods of drought or heavy rains.
The planting took place under the Floresta Comum (Common Forest) project, a program of incentives for reforestation to promote and encourage the creation of an indigenous Portuguese forest with great biodiversity and high levels of ecological services production. Quercus, the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities and the University of Tras-os-Montes and Alto Douro are partners to the Common Forest project.
