Within the scope of "The Motor Challenge Programme" promoted by the European Commission, Amorim Cork Composites, a company under the umbrella of the CORTICEIRA AMORIM group was distinguished with this significant award for implementing energy efficient measures, which have translated into an annual reduction in power consumption and CO2 emissions.
The Motor Challenge Programme was launched by the European Commission to promote CO2 emissions reduction. Industrial plants are urged to implement voluntary measures to improve their energy efficient power systems.
The measures implemented by Amorim Cork Composites were focused mainly on three key points: compressed air pressure reduction, acquisition of air compressors with a lower specific power consumption, with speed variation and equipped with a built-in controller designed to manage the whole compressed air system and elimination of air leakage in the compressed air distribution network. These measures are part of a vaster energy efficiency programme that is being implemented in all CORTICEIRA AMORIM member companies.
The figures resulting from this energy optimization are most encouraging: an energy saving of 491000 Kw per year translating into a significant reduction in CO2 emissions of about 238 tons/year.
CORTICEIRA AMORIM is proud to receive this award which recognizes the importance of the measures adopted and the results achieved by this company in meeting the targets envisaged by the EU's energy and environmental policies.
It should be pointed out that the use of biomass meets about 60 percent of CORTICEIRA AMORIM's energy needs. The improvement of this energy source (which is neutral in terms of CO2) and the implementation of energy efficient measures (as the ones which have been now distinguished) have contributed largely to CORTICEIRA AMORIM's continued and successful performance in terms of CO2 emissions in the most recent years.
