CORTICEIRA AMORIM's Corksorb absorbents range won the 2010 Portuguese Environmental Innovation Award, an initiative by Indústria e Ambiente ("Industry and Environment") magazine supported by APEA - Portuguese Association of Environmental Engineers, which serves as a platform of choice for the Environmental Innovation for Europe Award (EEP Awards).
For CORTICEIRA AMORIM "this is recognition of the innovative features and added value of natural cork, in particular of the Corksorb solution, in protecting the environment. Corksorb is an environmentally friendly and sustainable absorbent for use in oil and hydrocarbon spill control. The product was developed over the past six years. It is the result of a major investment in Research & Development by the Company and is fully aligned with the sustainability policy adopted by CORTICEIRA AMORIM.
CorkSorb absorbents are ideal for dealing with every kind of spills that may occur in industrial, road or water environments. The intrinsic characteristics of cork coupled with the development of a product focused on the market's needs have given rise to a range of products boasting excellent technical performance and competitive prices, offering customers a sustainable solution to deal with oil spills.
In addition to CORTICEIRA AMORIM, there were also other two award-winning Portuguese companies - ISA and Cabopol. iMerterKit, an energy efficiency solution designed by ISA - Intelligent Sensing Anywhere, a company based in Coimbra- Portugal, ranked second and Cabopol's biodegradable and compostable plastic composites won third place in the competition.
The three projects selected, in addition to being eligible to win the EEP award, will be also disseminated via the Industry and Environment newsletter, will be exhibited at the National Congress of Environmental Engineering and they may still be given the possibility of being present at the Pollutec's trade show (the most important event of the European environmental sector).
