As part of the Material Matters 2024 exhibition, held at the Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, in London, between September 18-21, Corticeira Amorim was proud to re-present Simone Brewster’s impressive installation, "Spirit of Place".
Originally presented at the London Design Festival 2023, the installation’s return to London reaffirms cork’s importance as a sustainable material, highlighting the essence of the natural landscape of the Herdade de Rio Frio estate.
Comprised by five monumental sculptures, the installation incorporates a combination of various cork composites, with different textures, colours and properties, all marked by the symbol (A) that is imprinted on Corticeira Amorim’s cork stoppers. Cork’s unique warm colour highlights the material’s natural qualities, such as durability and resilience, and reinforces its essential role in sustainable design.
Material Matters 2024 celebrates the circular economy and the influence of materials on design and architecture, offering the ideal setting to welcome back "Spirit of Place".
Corticeira Amorim would like to thank everyone involved in organising this event, in particular Simone Brewster for her artistic vision that has brought a genuine representation of cork oak forests and the value of cork to an international audience. We invite everyone to explore the gallery of images of the installation and discover the infinite possibilities that cork offers for sustainable design at https://materialmatters.design/Spirit-of-Place.
