Many cities contain empty, abandoned or underutilized urban spaces, which may be of great value for the community. Architect and engineer Gabriel Calatrava and CAL collective approached this topic by employing cork as the central component of a temporary system of occupation in order to create a new collective space in a public plot of land in Trafaria, south of the Tagus River.
“Onda” activates through local meetings and gatherings between the local community and visitors. But there is more to this. In partnership with EDA – Ensaios e Diálogos Associação, a local civic group, the local community is also an active part of the installation, bringing old and useless chairs to the exhibition space which will be refurbished with a layer of cork, not only to promote reusability and recycling but also the emotional relationship between the place and the population so it may create its own references.
