Within the scope of the support to be given by AMORIM to the Portugal Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, more than 5500 m2 of cork were sent to China to be applied in one of this EXPO's most emblematic buildings.
The cork arrived early this week to Shanghai. It was again chosen as a base and structural material for the Pavilion of Portugal, which boasts a bold architectural design. Cork will be displayed in various ways: on the facade of the building, as an outstanding element of the aesthetic design of the Pavilion, as a flooring material and in several technical solutions.
In line with the theme of Expo 2010 Shanghai "Better City, Better Life", cork was chosen not only because it is perfectly in line with the concept of sustainable construction, an example of innovation in perfect harmony with nature, but also because of the excellent acoustic and thermal insulation performance it offers.
The whole facade of the Pavilion - in a total of 3640 m2 - will be covered with more than 28 million kg of insulation corkboard, that is considered to be the most environmentally-friendly insulation solution in the world.
The floors of the building - including public access areas and ceremonial spaces - will be covered with Wicanders® brand cork flooring, in a total area of 1100 m2. The floors of the "Portugal, a whole world of energy" and "Portugal, a plaza to the world" exhibition areas as well as the lobby, the store, the wine area and the restaurant will be some of the areas that will be covered with Corkcomfort Floating HPS. As for office areas, the choice fell on the Woodcomfort product line that combines a floating cork floor with a real wood veneer as a top layer.
As far as technical solutions is concerned, 780 m2 of ACM (Acoustic Core Materials) manufactured by Amorim Cork Composites were sent to the Pavilion of Portugal in Shanghai. ACM is a range of cork-rubber materials providing optimal thermal and acoustic insulation performance. Taking advantage of the excellent sound absorption properties of ACM, this material will be applied in the projection room.
