Corticeira Amorim was invited to participate in the internationally acclaimed annual Wallpaper Handmade exhibition to be held at the Salone del Mobile in Milan, April 8th - 13th, 2014.
Wallpaper is a leading magazine championing the best in design and architecture. Handmade - a must-see exhibition that presents about 100 innovative pieces in Milan every year - was launched by Wallpaper four years ago. The exhibition's motto is "developing new partnerships that will culminate with the launch and presentation of unique pieces challenging the design limits."
This year's Wallpaper Handmade exhibition will present a selection of pieces ranging from a disruptive croquet set to sculptural pillars, a perfectly packed lunch box, a creative tool belt or a sophisticated jacket made from cork.
The invitation arose for Corticeira Amorim following Metamorphosis, an exhibition at the Jeronimos Monastery (Lisbon, Portugal) which drew attention to the immense potential of cork, a material that gathers all the attributes to be integrated into the Handmade exhibition.
The challenge was accepted. Todd Bracher, an industrial designer, was invited to design an object made from cork. After an initial briefing and a first contact with the material, the American designer freely admits that he was captivated by cork's natural charm: "it's not like wood, it´s not even like fabric, it's not like anything we know, it's got its own life."
Taking advantage of cork intrinsic properties, Todd Bracher has designed a cork jacket: "It is like furniture that came alive, furniture that had movement inside. (...) Cork is actually quite technical in its applications."
Todd Bracher founded his studio in New York City in 1999 and he has worked mostly in Copenhagen, Milan, London and Paris. His experiences range from working at Georg Jensen and Tom Dixon Studio, to collaborating with world-renowned brands such as 3M or Capellini.
